In January 2013, Ryan Shay, a former Major Midget with the South Shore Mustangs, was driving toward his hometown of Yarmouth.  Not far from the airport, he approached a sharp right turn, and lost control of his car.
As a result of the accident on that day, Ryan’s life took a drastic change, leaving him a quadriplegic and a tough next 8 months of being in the hospital and rehab. As a C7/C8 quadriplegic, he has no movement or sensation below the chest and while his arms and shoulders are powerful, he has lost some mobility in his hands.

At that time, the now 20 year old 5’11”, 175 lb former hockey player, Ryan was strong enough on his feet to have played in the Nova Scotia Major Midget ranks. He has now found a new life and a new dedication as a T52 class wheelchair sprinter, with aims to compete on the Canadian National Team. A wheelchair athlete for the past year, and chosen in 2014 to be on the Jr. National team representing Canada this past summer at the IWAS World Jr. Games, he has seen parts of the world he could only have imagined. He has big dreams – among them, the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

His strength is the 100-meter. In a borrowed racing chair, he has a best time of approximately 20 seconds. Sometimes faster in practice, he’s not too far from his age group world record of just under 17 seconds.

Those involved with the Tournament wish Ryan much success and share in his belief of competing in Rio in 2016.
